Zach Schultz:

It was a night in Mexico.

Zach Schultz:

It was the year that Old Crow was the headliner and Langhorn Slim opened up.

Zach Schultz:

I didn't know much about Langhorne.

Ben Fanning:

I had never seen an artist get on somebody's shoulders at the stage like Langhorne, go out in the crowd high fiving.

Ben Fanning:

And I've got a video of me getting a high five from Langhorne.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Zach Schultz:

One of my favorite nights of music that I ever experienced.

Ben Fanning:

Americana music.

Ben Fanning:

Music transforms the world and unfortunately, too many are unaware of its profound impact.

Ben Fanning:

Americana musicians are the unsung heroes, and here you'll join us in exploring these passionate artists and how they offer inspiration and hope for the future.

Ben Fanning:

This show makes it happen in a fun and entertaining way.

Ben Fanning:

You'll discover new music that you'll love.

Ben Fanning:

Hard earned lessons from the road, the story behind favorite songs, a big dose of inspiration for you and your friends, and a good laugh along the way.

Ben Fanning:

I'm Ben Fanning and my co host is Zach Schultz.

Ben Fanning:

It's time to get Americana curious.

Ben Fanning:

Hey there, everybody.

Ben Fanning:

Welcome back to Americana Curious.

Ben Fanning:

Today it's just Zach and I.

Ben Fanning:

Or not just Zach and I, it is Zach and I.

Ben Fanning:

We're here for what we're calling an interlude, which we are going to be on this together, sharing something with you.

Ben Fanning:

We're not interviewing Star today because we're kind of taking the place of that wood.

Ben Fanning:

The star is our stories and we have concocted an idea around the top three concerts that shaped us.

Ben Fanning:

You'll know if you know, you've been listening to the show, you know, we love our live music and so we're digging out of the archive and we're going to share with you what our top three, three concerts are, not just from an enjoyment standpoint or performance, but, but the ones that actually shaped us to be who we are today, bringing you this Americana curious.

Ben Fanning:

And we're going to start with Zach and we're going to trade out.

Ben Fanning:

Zach, what you got?

Zach Schultz:

Okay.

Zach Schultz:

All time.

Zach Schultz:

Now we're talking number.

Zach Schultz:

I'm going to rank them because they, they go in a ranked order for me.

Zach Schultz:

My first time seeing Bob Dylan, high school, age 17.

Zach Schultz:

He's, he's probably 60 at that time.

Zach Schultz:

But I am going through an obsession all through high school and teens of Bob Dylan, and I'm the only one in my high school probably listening to Bob Dylan.

Zach Schultz:

But he came to town with Paul Simon and it really, it was also one of my first concerts, so got to see my favorite legend at the time and he wailed at Canterbury Park In Shakopee, Minnesota.

Zach Schultz:

And I'll never forget it.

Ben Fanning:

Well, he's a Logos.

Ben Fanning:

He's a local boy.

Ben Fanning:

Right.

Ben Fanning:

He's a Minnesota native, Duluth.

Zach Schultz:

His blood runs with Minnesota Rivers.

Ben Fanning:

How did it shape your 17 year old self?

Zach Schultz:

I guess that it confirmed that when you're in high school and people are trying to make you listen to pop or something, everybody's listening to something that the other people are listening to.

Zach Schultz:

I was not like that.

Zach Schultz:

Still, I'm not.

Zach Schultz:

To the day.

Zach Schultz:

I was listening to Bob Dylan.

Zach Schultz:

When I would get in the car with my buddies, in my car, they had Bob Dylan playing and it was.

Zach Schultz:

This is.

Zach Schultz:

What is this crap?

Zach Schultz:

It confirmed that I was listening to good music and they weren't.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

Shout out to my friend Corey, who introduced me to Dylan at a young age.

Ben Fanning:

And I listened to it too.

Ben Fanning:

I didn't see him at a young age, but yeah, I was right, man.

Ben Fanning:

This guy is completely different than the music.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Zach Schultz:

And the top off with Paul Simon playing together.

Ben Fanning:

Not a bad.

Ben Fanning:

Not a bad combination.

Ben Fanning:

Oh, my gosh.

Ben Fanning:

Powerful.

Ben Fanning:

Mine, My first real concert, I lived in a small town, Alabama.

Ben Fanning:

Alexander City, Alabama.

Ben Fanning:

16,000 people.

Ben Fanning:

And there were some older guys in high school and I was in high school.

Ben Fanning:

And they invited me to go with them to my first real concert at Legion field in Birmingham, Alabama, to see U2 Octung Baby.

Ben Fanning:

Oh, and we had Digital Underground opening up and Big Audio Dynamite.

Ben Fanning:

And I'd never been to a show of that magnitude, really, of any show.

Ben Fanning:

And my heart was just like thumping in my chest.

Ben Fanning:

Not from excitement, but from the base.

Ben Fanning:

Just reverberating.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And it was incredible.

Ben Fanning:

There's this one part of the U2 concert where mysterious Ways was being played.

Ben Fanning:

And this belly dancer comes out and she has all these like little shiny discs on her.

Ben Fanning:

And the spotlights of the arena were hitting her.

Ben Fanning:

And as she twirled around, it was like throwing off all this amazing light.

Ben Fanning:

And it shaped me because I'm like, man, I have.

Ben Fanning:

I felt energy and music like I'd never felt before.

Ben Fanning:

And I understood it on a different level from just hearing it on the album.

Ben Fanning:

It was what does live actually do from the impact standpoint.

Ben Fanning:

And yeah, I never look back.

Ben Fanning:

So what's.

Ben Fanning:

What's your next one?

Zach Schultz:

All right, well, I'm gonna go with the next one that shaped my life because it led me to you, my friend.

Zach Schultz:

Girls Just Wanna Mexico.

Zach Schultz:

Not only the idea of a festival kind of taking over the living behind like a Lilith Fair.

Zach Schultz:

Lil Fare hadn't been around for a long Time.

Zach Schultz:

ale lineup in Mexico with her:

Zach Schultz:

And not only is the music good, the settings great, but the inclusivity of that event that first year was amazing.

Zach Schultz:

And I got to meet you, which led us to this.

Ben Fanning:

That's right.

Ben Fanning:

What it was transformative in so many ways.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And, yeah, it transformed us to making this darn podcast.

Ben Fanning:

And now we're 20 episodes in.

Ben Fanning:

Congratulations on our 20th anniversary together.

Ben Fanning:

And it's gone pretty darn well.

Ben Fanning:

My next one is a pandemic one.

Ben Fanning:

Y'all know, we were all kind of starved for live music during the pandemic, and our friends, David Brothers, which, by the way, Zach and I have also attended Avid at the beach in Mexico.

Ben Fanning:

But this is a different show because of all the social distancing and we hadn't had live music in a while.

Ben Fanning:

And the Avid's announced that they're going to be at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Ben Fanning:

That's right, in Charlotte.

Ben Fanning:

And they have these little.

Ben Fanning:

These little squares drawn out.

Ben Fanning:

And my family and I, my, My daughter and my.

Ben Fanning:

My wife, we decided to go up for it.

Ben Fanning:

And we thought, hey, we can take our lawn chairs and we can put out.

Ben Fanning:

But then literally the day before the concert, they're like, North Carolina's changed their rules.

Ben Fanning:

You actually have to be in your car to enjoy the concert or on top of the car.

Ben Fanning:

And we switched and we borrowed my dad's pickup truck.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

Put up our chairs in the back of this thing, rode up there, went inside, and really, we were really far from stage.

Ben Fanning:

But it was a really special night.

Ben Fanning:

And having experienced that with my family in such an uncertain time and just that familiarity, I really recognize a music, and live music can give us comfort on a completely different level.

Ben Fanning:

And so thankful to Avis for taking a risk that night.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Zach Schultz:

It's funny that you say everybody was clamoring for live music during that time, because I wasn't at that show.

Zach Schultz:

But it was so important to just see live show.

Zach Schultz:

I mean, we as a family live streamed it.

Zach Schultz:

And I remember them coming in around the track in.

Zach Schultz:

In that car.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And it was driving around.

Zach Schultz:

I imagine being there was better than live stream, but yeah, that was.

Ben Fanning:

You could see a little better probably than me.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

Right.

Zach Schultz:

Such a weird time.

Zach Schultz:

All right, so I'm going to combine a couple here.

Zach Schultz:

Not really, but it's just going to be John Prine all around.

Zach Schultz:

First time.

Zach Schultz:

I love John Prine.

Zach Schultz:

I'm here in Nashville for John Prine's birthday celebration.

Zach Schultz:

But the very first time I saw him, Minnesota Zoo, small venue.

Zach Schultz:

My wife now, who was my girlfriend, bought me tickets.

Zach Schultz:

We went together.

Zach Schultz:

She didn't know who John Prine was at the time, and we had eaten something terrible the night before, and we both had terrible food poisoning.

Zach Schultz:

And we went.

Zach Schultz:

And I just said, I'm not missing this because I don't know the opportunities I'm going to get to see John.

Zach Schultz:

Which led me to.

Zach Schultz:

We ended up seeing in Mexico together.

Zach Schultz:

And then I.

Zach Schultz:

The last time I saw him with Todd Snyder before he passed away, it was.

Zach Schultz:

Well, I didn't see a lot of the show because I cried a lot.

Zach Schultz:

And I.

Zach Schultz:

My wife said, why are you crying so much?

Zach Schultz:

And I said, I just don't feel like I'm gonna.

Zach Schultz:

I had a bad feeling that something was gonna happen.

Zach Schultz:

I just said, I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to see him again.

Zach Schultz:

And I didn't.

Zach Schultz:

But being here last night at the you got Gold celebration, where they honor artists come out and honor his legacy, is truly like kind of.

Zach Schultz:

You could feel him in that room last night.

Ben Fanning:

You.

Zach Schultz:

You could feel him there, which just brought back.

Zach Schultz:

I mean, everybody was just so happy and.

Zach Schultz:

But sad, you know.

Zach Schultz:

But that's John Prine number one.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And what the record show.

Ben Fanning:

John Prine is on Zach's T shirt.

Ben Fanning:

It's on his arm, on his tattoo.

Ben Fanning:

And it's been mentioned in every Americana curious episode by the artists we've had on.

Ben Fanning:

And we're not teeing it up saying, you have to mention John Bryan.

Ben Fanning:

And they.

Ben Fanning:

They are voluntarily showing up with that when they start thinking about their musical legacy.

Ben Fanning:

And no doubt John Prime's spirit as alive and well and certainly on this show.

Zach Schultz:

Oh, yeah, by the way, at the after party, I met about 65 people with John Bryant tattoos.

Zach Schultz:

So it's not.

Zach Schultz:

I'm not.

Zach Schultz:

I'm unique in my town, but not here.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

Oh, John.

Ben Fanning:

The John prime world.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And y'all, if you aren't listening to John prime, do yourself a little.

Ben Fanning:

Give yourself a little treat today and check out the song that Zach's going to tell you to listen to right.

Zach Schultz:

Now, which is Lake Marie.

Zach Schultz:

That's my.

Zach Schultz:

One of my favorites of all time.

Zach Schultz:

But the.

Zach Schultz:

Probably the one that I would say to a listener, go listen to Lake Marie.

Zach Schultz:

It.

Zach Schultz:

It'll change your life.

Ben Fanning:

Well, I'm gonna.

Ben Fanning:

I'm going to.

Ben Fanning:

Right now.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

I hadn't checked out in a long.

Zach Schultz:

Time, so there's a live version and there's a studio version.

Zach Schultz:

The Live version is probably the better version.

Zach Schultz:

And when later in his life he used to dance off the stage to Lake Marie, that was the.

Zach Schultz:

The closing song.

Zach Schultz:

So it's all right.

Ben Fanning:

Do yourself a favor.

Ben Fanning:

Listen to that today.

Ben Fanning:

I don't want to follow that, but I will try one of the.

Ben Fanning:

I would say the first time saw American Aquarium on Zach's recommendation.

Ben Fanning:

And I'd listened to it, and I'm like, okay, this sounds great, but, like, why is Zach pushing this so hard on me?

Ben Fanning:

And was coming to Charleston.

Ben Fanning:

And Zach's like, ben, it was not a good night.

Ben Fanning:

It was like a Monday night.

Ben Fanning:

It was not a good night to go out and stay out late.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And he's like, you're.

Ben Fanning:

He's like, he's gonna perform and he's gonna stick around afterwards.

Ben Fanning:

I was like, there's no way I go see American Aquarium.

Ben Fanning:

And he's.

Ben Fanning:

Everything that Zach said and more and his energy.

Ben Fanning:

I don't.

Ben Fanning:

At the time I thought, man, this guy's having a great night.

Ben Fanning:

Later I found out he has a great night every night.

Ben Fanning:

And his energy is just off the chart.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

He sticks around in the back afterwards and meets every single person and talks to them.

Ben Fanning:

And he's not just.

Ben Fanning:

He's not like selling merch.

Ben Fanning:

He's just talking to people.

Ben Fanning:

And you would never have known he'd performed for two and a half hours.

Zach Schultz:

Other than the sweaty shirt that he wear.

Zach Schultz:

Is wearing when he's back there.

Ben Fanning:

He does perspire, but you would too, if you'd be doing that.

Ben Fanning:

Oh.

Ben Fanning:

If you're working that hard.

Ben Fanning:

My friends were.

Ben Fanning:

Could not believe it because they did not know American Aquarium at all.

Ben Fanning:

And they're like, man, this guy.

Ben Fanning:

And that kicked off a lot for me.

Ben Fanning:

One it.

Ben Fanning:

I really started listening to Zach's recommendations, which he bats a very high percentage in terms of his bands and what he recommends.

Ben Fanning:

When Zach recommends it, I listen to it.

Zach Schultz:

We won't tell the ones that I miss.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

There just been a few.

Ben Fanning:

Not me.

Ben Fanning:

And.

Ben Fanning:

And I was like, hey, you know, it really connected me.

Ben Fanning:

It also.

Ben Fanning:

That also helped accelerate this podcast because we went to go see him together in Nashville at the Ryman we've sent which has led me to a private party near Charleston.

Ben Fanning:

Shot the Jim Nolte who hosted his house.

Ben Fanning:

Which is a whole nother story that without will share some time how we had a storm.

Ben Fanning:

We ended up in this small den.

Ben Fanning:

And he went.

Ben Fanning:

Did all this acoustic stuff.

Ben Fanning:

But how it shaped me was it made me one.

Ben Fanning:

I think it maybe double down on the smaller shows, the bar shows, and not just prioritize going to the biggies.

Ben Fanning:

It reminded me the specialness of that.

Ben Fanning:

And I would say I've actually started to steer clear of the big venues and really start to go independent local music and prioritize that.

Ben Fanning:

And I haven't been to.

Zach Schultz:

And that's.

Zach Schultz:

That's the bread and butter.

Zach Schultz:

You couldn't get me in a stadium.

Zach Schultz:

See, I showed.

Ben Fanning:

Starting to wind this up here.

Ben Fanning:

Do you have an honorable mention that you'd like to throw out there?

Zach Schultz:

I have an honorable mention performance.

Zach Schultz:

It stood out.

Zach Schultz:

It was a night in Mexico.

Zach Schultz:

I don't remember what year of it, but it was the year that Old Crow was the headliner and Langhorne Slim opened up.

Zach Schultz:

And it was one of my favorite nights of music because I didn't know much about Langhorne or.

Zach Schultz:

And I.

Zach Schultz:

I knew Old Girl.

Zach Schultz:

Everybody knows Old Girl, but I had never seen them and Langhorne in the crowd multiple times.

Zach Schultz:

It made me fall in love with him for sure, as a performer and a human being.

Zach Schultz:

And then to follow it up with Old Crow and that energy of Catch.

Zach Schultz:

I don't know how he keeps it up at this age, but, I mean, that night always.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah, that night just sticks out in my mind always as just one of my favorite nights of music that I ever experienced.

Ben Fanning:

I had never seen an artist get on somebody's shoulders at the stage.

Ben Fanning:

Like Langhorne.

Zach Schultz:

Exactly.

Ben Fanning:

Go out in the crowd high fiving.

Ben Fanning:

And I've got a video of me getting a high five from Langhorne.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Zach Schultz:

He was on that poor guy's shoulders for seemed like an hour.

Ben Fanning:

You con that security guard, right?

Ben Fanning:

Thank goodness Slim is slum.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And a slight man.

Zach Schultz:

Right?

Ben Fanning:

Oh, my gosh.

Zach Schultz:

Oh, that's great.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

So, so good.

Zach Schultz:

So what's your honorable mention?

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

1.

Ben Fanning:

I have so many a Funny Story.

Ben Fanning:

Indigo Girls.

Ben Fanning:

I was going to go see the Indigo Girl.

Ben Fanning:

So this was after.

Ben Fanning:

After the YouTube thing, and there was this girl I liked, and I'm like, man, I got tickets in Montgomery to go see the Indigo Girl.

Ben Fanning:

This is going to be a great date.

Ben Fanning:

And we got there, and she's like, I don't like them.

Ben Fanning:

And I was like, she had to go.

Ben Fanning:

This is my first time.

Ben Fanning:

So, y'all.

Ben Fanning:

I was really an Indigo Girls.

Ben Fanning:

And I thought, yeah.

Ben Fanning:

Mindset of everyone.

Ben Fanning:

It might have been like, you're Dylan Recognition.

Ben Fanning:

Like, okay, you like.

Ben Fanning:

You like Dylan a lot.

Ben Fanning:

But you're realizing it's easy to sort of be trapped in.

Ben Fanning:

Hey, I love It.

Ben Fanning:

The world must love it.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

And I was like, there are people out there.

Ben Fanning:

A girl that I like, and she doesn't like the band that I love.

Ben Fanning:

And by the way, no judgment today.

Ben Fanning:

Although I was judging then, but I'm trying not to do that now.

Ben Fanning:

But she's in different music.

Ben Fanning:

But I was like, wow, people do have different preferences.

Ben Fanning:

And I want to be the.

Ben Fanning:

I want to be the open person, even if it's a live show that maybe doesn't connect with me.

Zach Schultz:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

As much I want to be fully present.

Ben Fanning:

And we've recently hosted Steve Poltz on the show, who this episode is probably going to come after that.

Ben Fanning:

Go back and listen to that, because he has this really great philosophy about appreciating the music.

Zach Schultz:

I believe he said he was like a moth to a light when he's watching a live show where he sees the light and he must follow.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

There's always something to appreciate in that.

Ben Fanning:

So anyway, I had a lot of.

Ben Fanning:

So that shaped me a little bit, but kind of a fun story since then.

Zach Schultz:

I'm glad you ended up with Angela, because she loves the Indigo Girls.

Ben Fanning:

I know girls.

Ben Fanning:

And another side story.

Ben Fanning:

We met our first day of classes at the University of Alabama, and she was running late, and I was sitting in this English class, and she came in and teachers, like, is a smaller class.

Ben Fanning:

And teachers like, hey, I want you to interview somebody, and then I want you to introduce them to the class.

Ben Fanning:

Oh.

Ben Fanning:

I immediately knew.

Ben Fanning:

I'm like, I'm gonna interview her because she was cute.

Ben Fanning:

Yes.

Ben Fanning:

Turned towards like, I want to interview you.

Ben Fanning:

And she said, okay.

Ben Fanning:

And we found out that day that we liked Indigo Girls.

Ben Fanning:

When I entered.

Zach Schultz:

Oh, love it.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Zach Schultz:

Can I ask a sidebar?

Zach Schultz:

How far.

Ben Fanning:

How.

Zach Schultz:

How quickly after that Indigo, if that girl said, I don't like the Indigo Girls.

Zach Schultz:

Did the.

Zach Schultz:

Did the relationship last?

Ben Fanning:

I was devastated.

Ben Fanning:

I was completely devastated.

Ben Fanning:

Like, my mind couldn't wrap.

Ben Fanning:

I was like, can you tell me this?

Ben Fanning:

Before we came down, Like, I think she was open to the music, perhaps, and like, hey, I don't really know them, but I'm gonna.

Zach Schultz:

Did you.

Ben Fanning:

Did she.

Zach Schultz:

Did she go?

Ben Fanning:

Yeah, she went.

Zach Schultz:

So you went, But.

Zach Schultz:

And she didn't enjoy it.

Ben Fanning:

I was looking at her.

Ben Fanning:

I'm like, is everything okay?

Ben Fanning:

She's like, I just don't really like it.

Ben Fanning:

And I'm like, well, we're not leaving.

Zach Schultz:

I have to check in on this woman and see where she's doing now.

Ben Fanning:

Yeah.

Ben Fanning:

I protect the accident.

Ben Fanning:

It really.

Ben Fanning:

I wasn't mad.

Ben Fanning:

I was definitely like, devastated.

Ben Fanning:

I had hopes for this relationship and I'm like, well, if you don't like Indigo Girls, we're.

Ben Fanning:

We're gonna really.

Ben Fanning:

We're not getting started off on the right foot.

Ben Fanning:

Right.

Ben Fanning:

Like them or you don't.

Ben Fanning:

It's not a band really, that you can start to like you.

Ben Fanning:

It doesn't work that way, probably.

Zach Schultz:

That's so good.

Ben Fanning:

That's so good.

Ben Fanning:

What a story are y'all.
